Palakkad Style Bottle gourd Lentil curry is a spicy and tangy curry which blends well with cooked hot rice. The curry is famous in Palakkad district of Kerala. Got to learn this recipe from my aunt in Palakkad
Ingredients
- Bottle gourd – 2 cups diced
- Tomato – 2 chopped
- Shallots – 1 cup chopped
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp Salt
- water – 5 cups
To temper:
- oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard – 1/2 tsp
- shallots – few fine chopped
- Curry leaves – few
Garnish:
- Coriander leaves / Cilantro – handful chopped
Instructions
- Pressure cook toor dal till its tender Wash and clean the bottle gourd pieces
- Cook Bottlegourd and Toor dal till bottlegourd gets cooked well
- Add tomato, shallots, red chilli powder, coriander powder, salt and water to the cooked toor dal and let it cook in medium heat till bottle gourd is tender and the tomatoes are mushy
- Turn off the heat and Remove the curry from stove.
- Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard and let it splutter. Add shallots and curry leaves and saute till shallots turn light brown in color
- Add this sauteed mixture to the curry and combine well. Garnish with Coriander leaves
